In a thought-provoking gathering of minds, the Futures Thinking Orientation and Framing the Future Workshop took place on August 30-31, 2023. Hosted by the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano, the event championed strategic foresight over traditional strategic planning. The two-day seminar, featuring esteemed speakers Mr. Emmanuel R. de Guia and Ms. Jalaine Joyce Malabanan, left a lasting impact on participants and culminated in the unveiling of the SK MAHALAGA Framework.

Steering away from conventional methods, the event delved into the realm of futures thinking, a methodology that allows organizations to anticipate and prepare for potential scenarios. Mr. Emmanuel R. de Guia, Resident Futurist of the Office of Sen. Pia Cayetano, emphasized the significance of envisioning multiple futures to make informed decisions in the present.

Ms. Jalaine Joyce Malabanan, from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), shared her insights on futures thinking methodologies. She underscored the importance of critical thinking and intellectual discourse in shaping a robust approach to envisioning the future.

Among the distinguished participants were the three (3) vice presidents, the campus directors, the deans, the research and extension coordinators, the center directors, and other key officials from various divisions and units. This diverse assembly ensured a holistic exchange of ideas that transcended traditional boundaries, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that is central to futures thinking.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the Sultan Kudarat State University revealed its visionary Futures Thinking Framework: SK MAHALAGA. This acronym encapsulates the University’s aspirations for the future of Sultan Kudarat:

  • Sultan Kudarat: Uniting a Diverse People
  • MAmamayang nagkakaisa: A Unified Citizenry
  • HAlal na produkto: Ethical and Halal Products
  • LAwa’t likas na yaman: Bountiful Natural Resources
  • GAling at talino: Excellence and Intelligence

Dr. Samson L. Molao, the University President, elucidated the significance of the framework. He expounded that Sultan Kudarat is not only a geographical entity but a community characterized by unity amidst diversity. The framework envisions the creation of ethically produced Halal goods from both coastal and agricultural regions, harnessed by the skill and intelligence of Sultan Kudarateños. Furthermore, Dr. Molao highlighted the dual meaning of “MAHALAGA”: an amalgamation of “Mahal,” meaning love, and “Alaga,” signifying care. This essence underscores the deep-rooted connection between the framework and the well-being of the community it serves.

The Futures Thinking Orientation and Framing the Future Workshop left an indelible mark on the participants, igniting their commitment to strategic foresight. The event underlined the power of collaborative thinking and its potential to shape more resilient and adaptive strategies for an ever-changing world. The unveiling of the SK MAHALAGA Framework stands as a testament to the SKSU’s dedication to nurturing a future that thrives on unity, ethical practices, and excellence.

As we step into an era marked by uncertainty, the lessons and insights gleaned from this workshop serve as a guiding light for organizations and institutions striving to navigate the uncharted waters of not just one future, but a host of other possibilities.
