In a significant stride towards achieving the prestigious Philippine Quality Award (PQA), the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Science High School (DOST-PSHS) SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus conducted a benchmarking activity at the Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) on June 07, 2024. The event, held at the QMS Conference Room, SKSU-ACCESS Campus, focused on learning best practices in quality management systems (QMS) from SKSU, the first and only state university in Mindanao to receive the PQA Level II recognition for Proficiency in Quality Management.

The PQA, conferred by the President of the Republic of the Philippines, stands as the nation’s highest accolade for exemplary organizational performance in both the public and private sectors. It emphasizes excellence in quality management rather than service quality alone, aiming to enhance service delivery and responsiveness to client needs.

Recognizing SKSU’s remarkable achievement on March 23, 2022, the DOST-PSHS SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus has sought to emulate SKSU’s success. This benchmarking initiative aims to glean valuable insights into strategic planning, resource allocation, community engagement, student exposure, and continuous improvement. The activity is pivotal for the PSHS’s journey towards excellence, aligning with the PQA’s criteria for performance excellence, which encompasses leadership, strategy, customer focus, measurement, analysis, knowledge management, workforce, and operations results.

Key attendees at the event included:

  • Ednan H. Gallamaso, Campus Director, DOST – PSHS;
  • Jomari L. Tanghal, PQA Team Lead/Special Science Teacher I;
  • Roxanne Anunciado, PQA Team Co-lead/Special Science Teacher II;
  • Hanudin Pananggilan, PQA Team Member/Special Science Teacher III;
  • Phoebe Kates C. Tumamac, PQA Team Member/Special Science Teacher II; and
  • Jessa Mae M. Lozano*, PQA Team Member/Special Science Teacher II.

The initiative underscores the DOST-PSHS’s commitment to elevating educational practices and outcomes. By studying SKSU’s effective QMS and its strategies for achieving excellence, the DOST-PSHS aims to adapt these practices to their institution, thereby fostering innovation and continuous improvement in their educational approaches.

The SKSU Quality Assurance Office expressed enthusiasm for the collaborative effort, recognizing the mutual benefits of sharing best practices. This engagement is expected to significantly enhance learning experiences and student outcomes at the DOST-PSHS, contributing to the broader advancement of educational excellence in the Philippines.
