International Conference on Nature Studies and Innovation for the Environment (ICoNSIE) 2024 Opens with Emphasis on Global Collaboration

The much-awaited International Conference on Nature Studies and Innovation for the Environment (ICoNSIE) 2024 commenced with a resounding call for global cooperation in environmental research and conservation efforts. Hosted by Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) in collaboration with the Provincial Local Government of Sultan Kudarat and spearheaded by the Philippine Society for the Study of Nature, Inc. (PSSN), the conference has drawn participants from diverse institutions worldwide.

Dr. Jesusa D. Ortuoste, President of PSSN and OIC President of SKSU, welcomed attendees with a message of urgency and optimism, stressing the critical need for innovative approaches to address pressing environmental challenges. Her leadership underscores the conference’s role as a pivotal platform for advancing knowledge and collaboration in the field of environmental studies.

Dr. Edwin Jose C. Cubello, Vice President of PSSN and from Siliman University, introduced the global cohort of participants, emphasizing the conference’s international scope and the rich diversity of expertise present. The assembly comprises researchers, policymakers, and advocates united by a shared commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Dr. Zenaida Baoanan, Secretary of PSSN from UP Baguio, provided an overview of the conference themes, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of discussions and the innovative solutions being explored. Her presentation set the stage for in-depth conversations on topics ranging from natural capital accounting to biodiversity conservation.

The keynote address by Dr. Adrian Kuah, a distinguished scholar from the Cairns Institute and James Cook University, delved into the profound implications of Natural Capital Assets (NCA) degradation and depletion. His speech on Re-envisioning Nature Conservation in the Green Transition and Digital Transformation Era illuminated the complex interplay between environmental policy and ecological resilience, inspiring attendees to rethink existing paradigms and embrace sustainable practices.

Dr. Aekbal Salleh from the Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainable Development of the UiTM Malaysia likewise delivered her plenary speech on “Unveiling Urban Heat: Exploring the Urban Heat Island Phenomenon and Heat Vulnerability through a Comprehensive Literature Review and Meta-Analysis”. Dr. Salleh emphasized the human environment interactions as well as the adaptations and cooling strategies. During the open forum that ensued, a suggestion to “laymanize” the terms involving the topic was made to allow relatability.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts that made ICoNSIE 2024 possible, partner institutes were recognized for their significant contributions to the conference’s success.
