On October 28, 2024, the Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) officially launched its Doctor of Medicine program at the University Gymnasium. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including officials from Congress, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Provincial Government of Sultan Kudarat (PGSK), representatives from regional state colleges and universities, partner hospitals, SKSU personnel, and other stakeholders.
Dr. Jesusa D. Ortuoste, OIC President, officially opened the event by honoring the dedication of everyone involved in the program’s realization. She highlighted the team’s resilience through feasibility studies, proposal crafting, and strict evaluations leading to the launch. Dr. Ortuoste also conveyed gratitude to SKSU President Dr. Samson L. Molao, whose continuous support and initiative were instrumental in this achievement.
In a message of support, CHED Commissioner Ronald L. Adamat emphasized the crucial role of education in fostering community health and peace development. He acknowledged SKSU as the 22nd state university in the Philippines to offer a Doctor of Medicine program, noting its significance in broadening access to medical education and healthcare services.
The Provincial Government of Sultan Kudarat (PGSK), under the leadership of Governor Datu Pax Ali S. Mangudadatu, expressed strong support for the program. In addition to providing free education to the program’s 27 initial qualifiers, PGSK announced a monthly financial allowance of Php10,000 for each student.
The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an official tour of the new College of Medicine (COM) building. The establishment of the Doctor of Medicine program aligns with SKSU’s mission to advance healthcare in rural and underserved communities following approval from CHED through Commission en Banc Resolution 633-2024.
The launch of this program signifies a major milestone for SKSU, strengthening its commitment to addressing the region’s healthcare needs. The initiative also supports the national objective to increase the availability of healthcare professionals across the Philippines, particularly in rural areas where medical access remains limited.
The program’s creation is the result of extensive collaboration between SKSU and the PGSK, guided by House Bill 6771, “An Act Establishing a College of Medicine in the Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) in the City of Tacurong.” Authored by Hon. Bai Rihan Sakaluran, Representative of Sultan Kudarat’s 1st District, and sponsored by Cong. JC Abalos of the 4Ps Partylist, the bill reflects legislative efforts to enhance health services and educational opportunities for students and healthcare workers in rural and remote regions.
SKSU’s new College of Medicine not only bolsters the local healthcare workforce but also reflects the university’s enduring dedication to empowering the next generation of doctors committed to serving and uplifting their communities.
