Road to Regionals: SKSU-Laboratory High School Bags Multiple Awards in DSPC 2024

Campus journalists of Sultan Kudarat State University – Laboratory High School’s (SKSU-LHS) official publication, The Symmetry, received awards in different fields of journalism in the recently concluded 2024 Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC), with the theme: “Beyond Headlines: Understanding the Global Landscape Through Critical Journalism,” on March 7 to 9, 2024 at St. John Early Learning Center Inc., Tacurong City.

For the group events, SKSU-LHS dominated the Filipino and English categories in Radio Broadcasting with their back-to-back winning streak as both were hailed as overall champions. James Dupitas; Jandee Desales; Omeir Yasin; Jed Domondon, who won Best News Presenter; Rhea Falle, as well as Aron Quijance, who won Best Infomercial, together with Kce Kyle Chester Pineda, who was awarded as Best Anchor.

While in the English category of Radio Broadcasting, Nailah Kahar was awarded as Best Anchor; Arabela Estudillo as Best News Presenter; Daphne Lamintao, Myrrh Falsario, Ric Embajador, and Nash Bonita also bagged Best Infomercial, with Remo Leba as their Technical Application.

Moving on to the individual events, column writer Glenice Bernadette Moratalla was hailed champion in the Filipino category, while Jorge Gabriel Leysa placed 6th; Princes Aires Malaguial and Kenneth Cole Dermil were awarded champion and 2nd place, respectively, in the English category.

Moreover, in News Writing, Mowaddah Mohammad Taha bagged 2nd place in the Filipino category, while Precious Dolor placed 4th in the English category.

Ziah Hizon and Keithleen Lagmay earned 4th and 6th place, respectively, in Filipino Feature Writing. As for the English category, Eric Manalo Jr. bagged 3rd place, while Nichaela Tabares won 7th place.

Filipino editorial writer Isiah Jamison was hailed as the champion, while Hazell Del Mundo claimed the 5th place. English editorial writer Kenneth Orfecio was announced as the champion; Julia Lemana as 6th place, while Marianna Ledda was 7th.

Furthermore, Wendy Shynne Abalos placed 4th in Filipino sports writing. While under the English category, Carl Calimbo was awarded the champion; Kristyl Genova at 3rd; and Rayle Curaza clinched 5th place.

In the field of Copyreading and Headline Writing English category, Fathma Zyann E. Casan rose as the champion, with Christal Celestial at 2nd; Ashraine Ulangkaya at 4th; and Monique Abanales placed 6th. Meanwhile, Ashnie Ulangkaya placed 7th in the Filipino category.

Science and Technology writer Earl Caridad was hailed as the champion, Yra Hizon at 2nd; Zane Gesalan was awarded 3rd in the English Category. For the Filipino category, Maja Lamalan was announced 7th.

Editorial Cartoonist Julian Cajandig was awarded as the champion and Kris Espadero placed 3rd in the Filipino category. On the other hand, Jillian Dee was declared as champion and Alma Somera garnered 7th place in the English category.

In the Photojournalism Filipino category, Karylle Jordan was awarded as the champion and April Marie Tolentino got 3rd place. Ruveline Hinong won 6th in the English category.

The success of the scribes was guided by their coaches Jeeb T. Abelito, PhD; Welard Jay C. Vicera, MST; Norhata P. Malugayak MALT; Jonalyn S. Perfecio, MIE; Evora H. Dioneza, MAT; Jenevieve D. Lumbua-an, PhD; and Noraina M. Aguil, MAT.

Student-journalists who successfully snatched the 1st-5th placements will automatically qualify for the upcoming Regional Schools Press Conference 2024 in April 2024 to be hosted by the City Schools Division of Tacurong, Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat.
