Students, faculty researchers join 1st Regional Teacher Education Research Conference

More than 400 students and teachers from Region XII and the BARMM attended the 1st Regional Teacher Education Research Conference (RTERC) via Zoom on May 26-27, 2022 spearheaded by the College of Teacher Education (CTE) in collaboration with the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office XII(CHEDRO-XII).

The conference was anchored on the theme Capacitating the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIR) Skills of Educators in the New Normal” which commenced with a prayer led by CTE faculty, Victorino Laviste followed by the Philippine National Anthem and SKSU Hymn through an overture.

SKSU Vice President for Research Development and Extension (RDE), Julie Albano, PhD delivered her welcome address focusing on the importance of strengthening the thrust of the University to develop a research culture among faculty and students.

The SKSU President Rolando F. Hechanova, RPAE, PhD gave his message through Tacurong Campus Director Elvie Diaz, PhD.

“Just as we thought we know about the 21st century skills, here comes the fourth industrial revolution skills” Dr. Diaz said.

The Director IV of CHED RO XII Nelia Alibin, PhD was represented by Education Supervisor II, Annabelle Dafielmoto who delivered her recorded message and focused on legal bases of strengthening research undertakings in the Higher Education, the importance of agency partnerships, proliferation of innovation.

Regional Education Program Supervisor in English and Campus Journalism and the focal person in Research in Region XII- Curriculum Learning Management Division, Shiennalyn Antenor, PhD discussed the trends aligned with the programs of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Dr. Antenor also presented the legal bases of research in DepEd, basics of action research and themes for possible studies in DepEd.

Professor VI of SKSU-Isulan Campus, Mildred Accad, PhD centered her discussion on establishing international linkages through research.

“Always remember that when it comes to establishing international linkages, start small, think big”, Dr. Accad quoted in closing her presentation.

The parallel sessions commenced in the afternoon of the first day where faculty presenter hailing from different Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) and DepEd schools convened in the faculty research category and student presenters were divided into two categories namely: Capacitating Pedagogy in the New Normal and Capacitating Learner’s Psycho-social Development.

The second day kicked off with the continuation of the parallel sessions where faculty research presentations were divided into two sessions and the student category focused on the theme: Capacitating Researchers’ IMs Development and Extension Engagement.

Associate Professor of the University of Southern Mindanao, Marlene Orfrecio, EdD delivered her discussion on Research Engagement Across Curricular Helm (REACH).

Dr. Orfrecio also focused on the skills that are demanded of the learning community in the fourth industrial revolution.

The following panel evaluators and academicians were invited to determine the best papers in student and faculty categories: Mildred Accad, PhD of Isulan Campus, Giselle Lademora, EdD of Tacurong Campus, Paul Ryan Oñas, PhD, Helen Espartero, EdD and Ernie Cerado, PhD of ACCESS Campus, Allan Jay Cajandig, PhD of Palimbang Campus, Fahad Salendab of Kalamansig Campus, Dexter Necor, PhD of South Cotabato State College,  Ariel Ramos, PhD of Cebu Technological University- Argao Campus and Leodie Mones, Research Coordinator of DepED Sultan Kudarat Division.

The conference ended with the awarding of winners of best paper in the corresponding categories and themes:

  • Student category on the theme Capacitating Pedagogy in the New Normal: “Language on Web: Examining the Role of English Language as Medium of Instruction in Online Teaching” by Malou Belgira, Vanessa Epe, Richel Suan and Adrian Protacio of SKSU.
  • Student Category on the theme Capacitating Learner’s Psycho-social Development: “Students Demotivation in Using English as Language of Communication” by Jonica Gigawin, Lucy Lunjas, Shiela Mae Tenesio and Adrian Protacio of SKSU
  • Student Category on the theme Capacitating Researchers on IMs Development and Extension Engagement: “Symmetrical Patterns in the Handicraft -Baskets of the Teduray and Manobo -Dulangan at Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat” by Henelyn Dago-oc, Cathy Dap-og, Jenny Bave Estrada and Marilou Sombria of SKSU.
  • Faculty category 1: “Enhancement Module in Building Literary Engagement and Mastery (EMBLEM) and Students’ Literary Competence” by Clint Guillero of Koronadal National Comprehensive High School and Cristobal Ambayon, EdD of SKSU.
  • Faculty category 2: “Culturally-Diverse Students’ Lived Experiences in English as Language of Instruction” by Adrian Protacio of SKSU.
  • Faculty category 3: “Lived Experiences of Elementary Teachers in Far Flung Areas” by Enrique Cunah and Alfredo Sebuco, Jr. of Brokenshire College SOCSKSARGEN.

“We hope to present studies form the students at East West Mindanao Colleges in the next regional conference” Dr. Mones said in anticipation of the next leg of research conference.

Dr. Accad expressed her congratulations to all those who worked behind the conduct of the event and to those who participated.
